“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle
We know we should do more to live a healthier lifestyle, but sometimes we just feel overwhelmed, and don’t know where to start. If this is you, take heart. Here I have posted some simple ideas to help you create a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.
1. Don’t go out to eat. Not only will you save money, but also calories and fat. Restaurant food (even fast food) is almost always larger and more unhealthy than what you would eat at home.
2. Get out of your chair. Every hour or so, get up and walk around, do some squats, or jog up and down the stairs. Just move!
3. Quit smoking. This alone will add years to your life. Try www.cancer.org
4. Drink a bottle or glass of water.
5. Take a walk outside with a friend, family member, and/or dog.
6. Go to a farmers market with your family, and select some fruit and vegetables to have for dinner.
7. Buy whole wheat pasta instead of white.
8. Check out an exercise DVD from the library.
9. Wake up 10 minutes early and do 20 jumping jacks, 20 sit ups, 20 push ups, and have a good stretch.
10. Google “healthy recipes”, and sit down to browse. Then try one.
11. Hug someone. Can you think of a better stress reliever?
12. Sit still and close your eyes for 5 minutes. You can pray or meditate.
13. Jog in place for 5 minutes. Then take a break, and do it again.
14. When eating a salad, just dip each bite in the dressing instead of pouring it all on top. Or use balsamic vinegar to mix with your preferred dressing.
15. Wash your hands. It is the simplest way to prevent getting sick.
16. Pack your lunch. Be sure to include fresh fruits and vegetables.
17. Stick an apple or banana in your car for unforseen delays when you are hungry.
18. During your favorite TV show, get up during the commercial and do walking lunges across the floor. Don’t sit down until the commercials are over.
19. Check out your local health food store. You may find a new favorite food on sale.
20. Replace a soda habit with a water habit. You will be surprised at your new money saving habit!
21. Park in the farthest parking spot and walk.
22. Skip the elevator and take the stairs.
23. Go to bed earlier! Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each (or most) nights.
24. Bring healthy snacks to work for the late afternoon hunger pangs. Try nuts, fruit, lower-sugar granola bars,or whole wheat crackers with a few pieces of cheese.
25. Watch portion sizes. A whole bag of pretzels while watching “Lost” is too much.
